BREAKING NEWS: Juan Orlando Hernandez, former US and Canadian-backed dictator of Honduras, arrested for US drug-trafficking charges

Hondurans celebrate as Juan Orlando Hernandez was handcuffed, chained and arrested by police. The former US and Canadian-backed President is being held at a military base until presented before a judge on Wednesday, to be notified of the charges he faces in the United States.

Truth & accountability for US & Canadian complicity

It is not plausible that this corrupt, military regime would have come to power in the first place, without US and Canadian support for the June 28, 2009 military coup that ousted the elected government of President Mel Zelaya.

It is not plausible that the drug-trafficking regime headed by Juan Orlando Hernandez and his National Party would have remained in power for 12 years and 7 months without the unconditional support of the US, Canada, Spain and the EU, the World Bank, Inter-American Development Bank and International Monetary Fund, and numerous global companies and investors.

From the day of the 2009 coup forward, Republican and Democrat administrations in the US and Conservative and Liberal governments in Canada, maintained full military, economic and political relations with this “democratic allie” in Honduras, lying every step of the way about the true nature of the military-backed, corrupt, exploitative and repressive regime they were propping up.

The crucial question for US and Canada is: Will our legal and political systems, and our media outlets, properly investigate and report on US and Canadian support for 12 years and 7 months of corrupt, repressive, open-for-global-business regimes in Honduras?

Why do thousands of Hondurans & Guatemalans flee into exile year after year?
The U.S. and Canadian governments, Spain and E.U., the World Bank and global businesses and investors (in the sectors of mining, dams, African palm, sugarcane, bananas, garment “sweatshop” factors, tourism, etc.) maintain full relations with anti-democratic, corrupt, repressive, ‘open-for-global-business’ governments in Honduras and Guatemala, contributing to and benefitting from exploitation and poverty, environmental harms, repression and human rights violations, corruption and impunity.

Act / Stir up the pot / Chip away
Keep sending copies of Rights Action information (and that of other solidarity groups/ NGOs) to family, friends, your networks, politicians and media, asking: ‘Why do our governments, companies and investment firms help cause, benefit from and turn a blind eye to poverty, repression and violence, environmental and health harms that cause the forced migrancy / refugee crisis in Guatemala and Honduras?’
